Project Title: National Inland Fisheries Enhancement Program (NIFEP)-Balik   Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL) Project

Background/ Rationale

The National Inland Fisheries Enhancement Program (NIFEP), launched in 2015, focuses on rehabilitating and managing lakes and reservoirs in rural areas with limited fish supply. It benefits over 16,000 fisherfolk, enhancing their livelihood and food security. By using scientific approaches like profiling natural food bases and matching them with fish species, fish production can increase from 50 kg/ha/year to 500 kg/ha/year. In 2017, Project BASIL (Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa) was introduced to rejuvenate major inland waters, enhance fisheries, and conserve biodiversity. The initiative targets key lakes and rivers nationwide, stocking them with indigenous and economically valuable fish species. The program also supports socio-economic growth: male fisherfolk benefit from improved catches, while women gain income opportunities through fish marketing. Capacity-building activities include training in resource management, gender sensitivity, and livelihoods. Through sustainable practices and community involvement, NIFEP drives fisheries productivity and uplifts rural communities.
