The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – National Inland Fisheries Technology Center (BFAR-NIFTC) will enhance its focus on organic aquaculture by improving diet and nutrition, including the production of organic fertilizers and feeds. Through upgrades to the Natural Food and Formulated Feeds Laboratory, the Center will produce organic feeds on a larger scale using indigenous plant materials and knifefish fishmeal. Feeding trials and technology demonstrations will be conducted to test these organic feeds on species like Common Carp, Chinese Major Carps, Native Catfish, Pangasius, and other indigenous freshwater species.
Additionally, the Center will promote organic aquaculture inputs such as fingerlings, natural food, feeds, and fertilizers. This approach emphasizes the use of natural, chemical-free inputs to protect ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and improve soil and water quality, fostering sustainable aquaculture practices. National training on organic aquaculture will also be provided to BFAR TOS staff, LGUs, fisherfolk, and private sectors.
